First photo? This was of my Gran and brother in the mid 1970’s. A beautiful colour portrait with both their heads chopped off…
What made you pick up a camera? Inheriting my Grandads negatives from the 1930’s to 1950’s who was a passionate photographer in his day. Syd Symons my first photography teacher at Gillingham Secondary School in the UK was also a huge influence early on.
Why film? It slows me down and for me nothing beats the magic of taking the films out of the developing tanks and seeing the negatives for the first time.
What film do you use? I do like to mix it up, but my two go to films are Ilford HP5 and Ilford FP4.
What was your first camera? A Fujica ST605n single lens reflex from the late 1970’s.
What is your favourite camera? I love the simplicity of rangefinder cameras and I shoot most of my work on a 1931 black Leica III (named Tinny).
Favourite focal length? I use everything from 15mm through to 105mm but I think the majority of my work is taken with either a 50mm or 35mm focal length.
Do you use modern or vintage lenses? Both. I love the modern Voigtlander L39 lenses, but I also use 1930’s Leitz lenses along with 1950’s Canon and Nikon lenses too.
Favourite photographer? Too many to mention here but I’ve always had a soft spot for both André Kertész and Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Where did you learn? I started learning at secondary school, but went back and studied years later, ultimately ending up with a Higher National Diploma in Photography and Imaging.
